Redwood Lumber Front Range Lumber Colorado

Redwood is one of the most popular woods to build with for good reason.

Redwood’s rich red-brown color is beautiful and it can stand up to Colorado’s harsh weather.

Much lighter in weight than plastic composite and tropical hardwoods, redwood can be easily cut, sawed, and drilled with regular woodworking tools. Even though it is light, redwood is one of nature’s strongest building materials with shear strength up to 5x greater than plastic decking products.

Redwood is durable and naturally resistant to insects and decay. It also resists warping, splitting and stays comfortable to bare feet even on the hottest, sunniest days compared to some other materials.

Redwood is an environmentally friendly choice.

Redwood is one of the ‘greenest’ building materials available. It is harvested from sustainably-managed California forests, a renewable resource protected by some of the toughest environmental laws in the world. Redwood is entirely recyclable and biodegradable.

Choosing redwood can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. As trees grow, they remove the greenhouse-gas carbon dioxide from the air through photosynthesis. The carbon is stored safely in wood fibers, and oxygen is released back to the air.

Redwood lumber for sale at Front Range Lumber:

  • The price of 14′ redwood is WAY cheaper than the 12′ redwood price in the 2×6 decking size
  • All of our redwood is B grade (as described below)
  • We have 2×2’s in 8’s and 10’s
  • Although not in every length, we do have 1x in 1×4, 1×6 and 1×8.
  • We have good stock on 2×8 redwood
  • New incoming just arrived – 2×12 redwood
  • 4×4 in 8, 10 and 12’s

Everyone’s expectation of what redwood appearance and quality should be is different. We attempt to only stock a “B Grade” – this grade is getting close to “clear” (no knots) but is NOT a clear grade.

Further, B Grade it contains both red (heart) wood and white (sap) wood in varying proportions. These boards can have knots and/or OPEN knotholes (or other imperfections), which are allowed under the grade. As the “coloring” determines grade, we cannot “select” out boards that are clear or all red colored. We urge you to see what you would get PRIOR to finalizing any order.

We carry a wide selection of redwood.

Both our Lakewood and Fort Lupton lumberyards carry a wide selection of redwood in 1x boards, 2×4, 2×6, 2×8 and 2×12 and 4×4 – all in B grade. Not all lengths are available. 1×10 and 2×10 is not stocked – we suggest moving to a 12” nominal product.

Overall, availability of redwood wood products, especially in better grades, is hit or miss. Please plan ahead and be as flexible as possible in your needs. Pricing is widely different based on grade – compare VERY carefully. There is “redwood” readily available at half the cost, but it is a far lower grade.

Redwood remains the optimal choice in wood for decks and other full-appearance exterior projects. Everyone respects and admires the look of redwood.

What Is Redwood Lumber Used For?

Redwood has a relatively high density, making it ideal for flooring, decks, furniture, pergolas, fences, cabinetry, and paneling. Due to its smoothness, redwood wood can be easily worked and carved.

Redwood lumber is fire-resistant, making it an ideal building material for exterior cladding.

Natural chemicals in the heartwood provide redwood with outstanding durability. It resists water, insects, and decay-causing fungi, and can withstand the elements, making it ideal for any outdoor project.

Redwood also makes excellent millwork and siding. Because the wood imparts no odor or taste to liquids, its prime stock for water tanks and other vessels.
