11 Tips When Installing Paneling or Siding in Your Home.
Here’s a few tips to use when installing wood paneling or siding that you won’t find in “normal” installation instructions. These tips apply directly to wood in a T&G pattern, but helpful on most all patterns.
Most importantly, don’t just grab boards and start installing – look at what you have!
- If possible, order lengths best suited for installation. For example, to use boards vertically in an 8’ tall room, get 8’ boards if possible. Note however, many patterns may only be sold in “random lengths”.
It might be easier in the long run to paint/stain/clear coat boards before installation. The BEST approach is coating all surfaces – including the ends. - On any grade, there will be some waste &/or boards with imperfections. This increases on a knotty grade. It further increases on an exposed edge pattern like bevel or shiplap. As a rule, the lower the grade, the greater the amount unusable.
Related to the above, almost certainly the siding/paneling started off as boards, whoever milled the boards into the milled pattern can mill away at least some edge damage/imperfections. - Remember - base molding and other trim will hide end damage/imperfections.
“Save” pieces that may not be your favorites to use where they’ll be behind a door, in a closet, on the back side of a building, covered by furniture, etc. - Also, save pieces that don’t have knots around the area where you’ll need to cut anyway for an electrical outlet, plumbing or other similar things you’ll have to work-around.
Some pieces might have damage in the middle on the edge – save those for the piece(s) you cut a U-shaped area out to fit around a window or similar.
Save pieces with a lot of knots or damage to cut smaller for shorter pieces around doors and windows or the inevitable skinny pieces in the corner. - Be aware of your scraps – those pieces will be long enough for above/below openings like doors and windows. Try to utilize all the wood you bought.
- Remember to gap the bottom off the floor on interior applications to get flooring (tile, carpet, etc.) installed. The gap will be covered by baseboards.
- On exterior applications, remember to gap up off roof and other surfaces and to use flashing. It’s imperative to seal ALL surfaces – including the ends on exterior work.
- At least some patterns come reversible – choose the best side you like to install as the exposed side. Reversible patterns allow more versatility in choosing for grain, color, etc.
- On T&G specifically, start in one corner with the groove in the corner, then on the next wall start with the tongue edge. This will help use up boards differently. Also in the corner, trim a bad edge off on an otherwise great piece to have a starter piece.
- T&G is not recommended for exterior vertical installation.
Siding should always shed water down and away from the wall. T&G should be installed grooved edge down on exterior jobs. On lap patterns, the overlap should always be along the bottom of the “top” board. - If you have a seam no matter what you do (for example, a 24’ run and the longest pieces you can get are 16’) we suggest getting a wide variety of lengths. We understand the temptation is to get all long boards, but buying all one length will mean your seams will all fall in the same place (or you’re just cutting long boards anyway). Remember as a general rule, you may be paying a premium for long lengths.
In the end, a successful paneling or siding project comes down to thoughtful preparation and smart use of materials. By planning your layout, working around natural imperfections, and maximizing each board, you can achieve a clean, high-quality finish while keeping waste and costs to a minimum.
